The Godfather of Malaysian MMA: Meet Melvin "Overkill" Yeoh

Every great fight promotion has someone who refused to let it die in the early, unglamorous days. For Ultimate Beatdown, that person is Melvin "Overkill" Yeoh — a former school teacher turned professional fighter, gym founder, and one of the genuine pioneers of Malaysian MMA.

Who is Melvin "Overkill" Yeoh?

Born in Perlis in 1981, Melvin Yeoh found martial arts young — taking up Taekwondo at 13, then Muay Thai. When his teaching career moved him south to Johor Bahru, he brought that obsession with him.

He didn't just promote fights — he had them. Yeoh is a professional MMA fighter with a 7–3 record who competed at the highest regional level, including the ONE Championship Malaysia Featherweight Tournament in 2013. But his biggest mark on the sport came from what he built outside the cage.

How did he start Ultimate Beatdown?

It started with a gym. In 2006, Yeoh founded the first MMA camp in the Johor Bahru region — the Ultimate MMA Academy. With a base and a growing community of fighters, he needed somewhere for them to compete. So in 2010 he launched Ultimate Beatdown, beginning as invitation-only "Ultimate Fight Night" cards run out of his own gym in Mount Austin.

From those gym nights, he grew UB through bars, malls, rooftops and arenas — five distinct venue eras across 16 years. (We tell that full story in 16 Years of Ultimate Beatdown.)

Why does he matter to Malaysian MMA?

Because he built the pathway, then walked fighters down it. Yeoh isn't only a promoter — he's a head coach who develops talent. Most notably, he guided Jihin "Shadow Cat" Radzuan from prospect to ONE Championship, where she debuted in 2018 as one of Malaysia's standout atomweights.

Through his promotion, fighters like Trestle Tan (who went on to ONE Championship) and Yadwinder Singh (who went on to WSOF) got the early, repeated competition that careers are built on. As a ONE FC Network partner, Ultimate Beatdown became a recognised feeder into the wider Asian MMA scene.

What keeps him going?

Running a fight promotion in Malaysia for over a decade — through venue changes, a 20-month COVID shutdown, and every cost in between — takes a stubborn belief in the sport. Yeoh's mission has never changed: give Malaysia its fight. Provide a properly run, safe, competitive platform where amateurs can debut, gain experience, and — for the special few — launch a professional career.

Sixteen years and 60+ events later, that vision still drives every UB card.
